“ If you’re full Chinese, why is your last name Garbanzo?” I get this question pretty much every time a new friend finds me on Social Media. To avoid confusion, yes I’m 100% (wonton making, tofu eating, kung fu fighting, ping pong playing) Chinese. Freshman year of college a dear friend of mine said my head shaped like a garbanzo bean so I changed my last name on Facebook as a joke. When I decided to change it back a couple weeks later, Facebook didn’t let me because I’d already changed my name too many times that year. That's the whole story, and I just kept Garbanzo all these years. So yea, it’s not Spanish, it’s not Italian, it came from a bean.
Last month Barney’s launched the Adidas X AlexanderWang collection in store. I picked up a reversible bomber jacket and a pair of running pants. My awesome photographer roommate Kenny, being the visionary artist as always, decided to film a fashion dance video with me wearing this outfit and getting down to Waiting by RL Grime. Since The fashion designer is of Chinese descent, we shot the video in the notorious Manhattan China Town. At the time my left ankle was actually broken from the Paris trip incident but silly me had no idea. I was hopping around, body rolling, and nutcracking all over Doyer Street in front of a bunch of confused Chinese grandmas, feeling badass as ever. I danced in a fish market, on an abandoned shopping cart, and in front of a 69 sign (some Chinese restaurant). It was awesome! You can watch the video on my "Sway" page.
P.S. I've always thought reversible clothing is difficult for designers to pull-off. And unfortunately the beloved Alexander Wang is no different. I tried wearing the bomber jacket inside out and it just didn’t work.
